At the heart of instability

Mali 2021 – Millennium, LifeGate, TRT World, Jesus, RSI TV

Over the past five years, I dedicated considerable time to investigating the underlying causes of the rise and spread of violent jihadist extremism in the Sahel region. The goal was to show how major jihadist groups manage to exploit inter-communal conflicts generated by the struggle for access to fertile land and water resources. Is there a link to the effects of the climate crisis?

The reportage project carried out in central Mali is the centerpiece of the years-long in-depth study, chosen due to the challenging accessibility and the intricate nature of the situation. The reportage took place in the Mopti region, into the Inner Niger Delta, where testimonies and stories of ethnic Peul, Bozos and Dogon people were collected. Central Mali, where Mopti is located, is also at the center of conflict between the Support Group for Islam and Muslims’ (JNIM) extremist Al Qaeda sphere and The Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS) seeking control of the region.

The Peuls, historically nomadic herders and traders with a rich cultural heritage, have faced marginalization over time due to intercommunal conflicts. Regrettably, they are now often associated with the proliferation of Jihadism in the region, adding a layer of complexity to their portrayal.
Another interesting topic was the “dozos” hunters from the Dogon community, who officially combat jihadists. Unfortunately, many members of these self-defense groups have also been guilty of serious crimes against the civilian population.
