Dawn of a conflict

Burkina Faso 2019 – LifeGate, Jesus, RSI, Africa e Affari

This project went to investigate the origins of inter-community conflicts between Mossi (mostly sedentary herders) and Peul (nomadic herders) in central Burkina Faso.

Today the country is convulsed by the presence of jihadist groups such as Al Qaeda and the Islamic State that have implanted themselves in much of the territory exploiting precisely these deep-seated tensions related to land and increasingly scarce resources.

The reportage was carried out in areas where the jihadists had just begun to strike provoking a backlash from some communities who armed themselves with popular militias called “Koglweogo” (majority Mossi) who attacked herding communities accusing them of being allied with the terrorists. This violence has fueled tension and prompted more young peuls to join the jihad.

So many human rights violations have been recorded since then in the country ance today that a military junta has taken power and institutionalized these popular militias.

Today “ le Pays des personnes intègres ” sees no end to this conflict….
