The forgotten conflict

SENEGAL 2022 – DW, Jesus, Nigrizia, RSI TV

Casamance, a region distinguished by its unique cultural identity within Senegal, is the site of Africa’s longest-running separatist revolt started by the “Mouvement des forces démocratiques de Casamance (MFDC)”. The uprising has persisted for over 40 years without a formal resolution.

This region, still poor and plagued by problems such as illegal trafficking, deforestation, and intensive fishing, is nonetheless trying to turn the page despite the many unresolved scars.

This in-depth reportage was produced on the 40-year anniversary of the rebellion. Over the course of more than a month-long field mission, the project delved into the narratives of various individuals, including: former MFDC fighters who remain steadfast in their belief in Casamance’s potential for independence, an environmental activist combating logging traffickers along the Gambian border, one of the few female deminers working to clear Casamance of the lingering consequences of war, individuals invalidated by landmines, and a young rapper striving to promote peace and help heal the wounds of the conflict.
